Gazeley has delivered today a new e-commerce distribution centre at G.Park Enfield, North London for the UK’s largest retailer, Tesco.

The £20m deal was secured in January following fierce competition, and was a result of Gazeley’s ability to deliver cost-effective distribution projects within tight timescales. Testament to Gazeley’s strong relationship with local planning authorities, permission for construction was secured in just 11 weeks.

The 15,000 sq m build-to-suit project, which will serve as a merged distribution function for the Dot Com and Tesco Express parts of the business, is part of the 15.5 acre G.Park Enfield site, one of the largest industrial warehouse developments on the M25 motorway. Its prime location provides easy access to the London area, the Home Counties, as well as the UK’s major transport links. Once operational, it will generate around 550 jobs in the local area.

Ben Woolman, Tesco’s Construction Development Manager for the South West, commented: “This project represents a significant investment for Tesco and is a key to growth for the Tesco Dot Com function of the business. Choosing the right developer was crucial. Our decision was swayed by both Gazeley’s high quality of build and the speed in which they could respond to our needs. Obtaining planning permission in just seven weeks meant we could transition  quickly  from design stages to starting on site.  Gazeley demonstrated an understanding of Tesco requirements for early access. This understanding is critical when a highly automated system is at the centre of the fit out contract. The business plan for Tesco Dot Com clearly sets out growth for the coming years and Gazeley’s collaborative and flexible approach makes them an ideal partner to work with on potential future projects."

Nigel Godfrey, Senior Vice President, said: “We have significant experience in delivering bespoke solutions for our customers. Our partnership approach means we were able to deliver this strategic site for Tesco in a very short timescale."

The completion of the building has triggered the forward sale of the facility to IM Properties.
