The warehouse and distribution centre, designed and developed by Gazeley, was delivered to Wal-Mart at the end of September 2007. Featuring a vast array of sustainable measures, the development is designed to reduce carbon dioxide emissions as well as energy and water consumption.
Innovative features include:
- T5 energy saving light bulbs (which save 20 - 30 percent more energy than normal light bulbs) fitted throughout the building
- An air-conditioning heat energy recycling system
- Renewable energy, from 20-square-meter wide solar PV panels and two 10-kilowatt wind turbines, powers the building
In total, the features incorporated by Wal-Mart Tianjin Distribution Centre can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 31 tons each year – that’s the same amount emitted by a typical family over the course of 138 months.
The judges explained that Gazeley was awarded this prestigious honour due to its strict implementation of high international environmental protection standards, advanced technologies, and proven commitment to sustainable development.
Jonathan Fenton Jones, global procurement and sustainability director, said: “At Gazeley we recognise that being a profitable business, protecting the environment and making a difference in our communities are compatible. As we moved into this exciting new market only two years ago, we are delighted to have been honoured with such a prestigious award already. We’re looking forward to developing even more warehouses across the country, helping businesses to achieve their sustainability objectives.”
Antonio Lee, Senior Director, Supply Chain of Wal-Mart China: “The Wal-Mart Tianjin Distribution Centre is an excellent example of Gazeley’s local implementation of their global sustainable development strategy. Wal-Mart strives to ‘save people money so they can live better’, and the completion of the new Wal-Mart Tianjin Distribution Centre can help us to better achieve this goal.”
